Be Glad your Nose is on Your Face
By Jack Prelutsky
Genre: Poem
Be glad your nose is on your face,
not pasted on some other place,
for if it were where it is not,
you might dislike your nose a lot.
Imagine if your precious nose
were sandwiched in between your toes,
that clearly would not be a treat,
for you'd be forced to smell your feet.
Your nose would be a source of dread
were it attached atop your head,
it soon would drive you to despair,
forever tickled by your hair.
Within your ear, your nose would be
an absolute catastrophe,
for when you were obliged to sneeze,
your brain would rattle from the breeze.
Your nose, instead, through thick and thin,
remains between your eyes and chin,
not pasted on some other place--
be glad your nose is on your face!
Analysis:
Be
Glad Your Nose is on Your Face, by Jack Prelutsky, is a humorous poem. The poet uses
illustrations that make the poem memorable, especially for children. This poem
is one that children can easily grasp. Its words are easy and the pictures
funny. The images of the nose between the toes and having to smell the feet all the time help the reader or hearer, remember them for a long time.
The poem is literally about your nose being on your
face and how you should be glad its not some other place. The author uses
personification: Your brain will rattle from the breeze; Imagery: sandwiched
between your toes; and Metaphor: he uses metaphor throughout the whole poem
saying that your nose is in different places. Jack utilizes the following sound
devices: alliteration: through, thick, and thin; Rhyme: face, place; and
assance: were, where. The theme that the poet used for this is to be contented and be thankful of what we have and do not try to change it because it might do no good.
